Spring 2025 / COSC 3330, Fundamentals of Networking

Catalog Description:
Required for COSC major, IT major and minor, and elective for COSC minor. Topics include methods of data transmission, hardware systems, error detection, network architecture and protocol definition. Application studies include satellite services, choosing voice data switches, LAN configuration, and cloud computing. Students must have a laptop computer.
Prerequisites: CoIs 2350 [with grade of C or better].

Course Overview:
A study of the theory and principles used in the design, implementation, and administration of computer networks. In this course, students learn the foundational concepts behind modern networking systems and investigate key topics including IP addressing, routing, network protocols, and cloud computing. Students will explore network architecture, methods of data transmission, hardware systems, error detection techniques, and strategies for designing and managing efficient and secure networks. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a deeper knowledge and understanding of how networking systems operate and will be able to bridge the connection between theory and practical application. Students will NOT be required to purchase software but must bring a usable laptop to all class sessions. This is a technology-intensive course.
